Mind Maps, Sketches, Image Collection

Following on from Design Research Assignment 2, I attempted to put some of the findings into practice.

I began with mind maps to create inspiration for the female robots of how I was going to attempt this and what was going to be implemented and considered. Did I need a background story first? I felt that this could be left till the end once more ideas are in place and set in stone, rather than having to possibly change all this in the future as the background story can match the character quite simply and the focus is all on the character rather than story.

I took heed of Adam's suggested via mood boards and adapted it slightly by creatingw various boards on Pinterest as can be seen via the link above. Such as mechanical parts, female robots/androids, robot movies, etc.

This led to some basic outlines of female silhouettes as shown below, I sat contemplating for probably a bit longer than I should have. Pondering about what each one resembled, such as strength, thought, flirty, one I sketched just resembled my love of superhero's and immediately I imagined they were flying.
This helped slightly in what I felt the character was going to portray immediately just from the pose and I am torn between just a strong front stance and the superhero pose as shown below.

Having not 'really' drawn for a while, it has always been a passion, wether it's from doodles on my work to playing another one of those drawing apps, my skillset was a little rusty. Inspiration was running thin and a million and one ideas in my head. So I chose a random mecha robot from online and decided to sketch him, or what I presumed to be 'male'. I began thinking in terms of what could be altered to make female, besides the obvious overall colour  of which I hadn't even began yet, and... the most obvious of adding breasts, which I wanted to avoid.

Looking between the two even though they were brief minor adjustments and there was a bad placement with the bolts on the female version, I personally would have put them both in same category of male. Adding colour could automatically change the 'sex' of the female attempt, however without it I was back to square one. I asked a couple of colleagues in the Computing department as there are some avid gamers. A couple of suggestions were to make it slightly slimmer around the legs and instead of emphasising the sharp boxed edges, to make the character smoother/softer. Something to attempt tomorrow!
